Abstract

Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan CMC (Carboxymethyl cellulose) dan PVA (Polyvinyl acetate) sebagai bahan kimia tambahan surface sizing dalam meningkatkan mutu kertas CF (Coating Front) NCR (Non Carbon Required). Tujuan utama dari proses surface sizing adalah untuk meningkatkan sifat permukaan kertas dan untuk mengikat partikel seperti serat dan pigmen agar lebih kuat pada permukaan kertas. Penelitian dilakukan dengan tahapan : pengecekan properties bahan baku, preparasi tapioca starh, CMC, dan PVA, serta pengujian properties base paper setelah surface sizing dan kertas CF. Variasi yang dilakukan adalah (A) tapioca strach 97% : CMC 3%; (B) tapioca starch 95% : CMC 5%; (C) tapioca starch 90% : CMC 10%; (D) tapioca starch 100 % + PVA 1 kg/ton kertas; (E) tapioca starch 100 % + PVA 2 kg/ton kertas; (F) tapioca starch 100 % + PVA 3 kg/ton kertas. Untuk base paper setelah surface sizing, hanya variasi A dan B yang lolos spesifikasi base paper NCR yaitu memiliki nilai gramatur 69 ± 2 g/m2, thickness 90 ± 4 ?m, smoothness 30 ± 4 bekk second, dan air permeace 550 ± 250 mL/min. Kertas CF yang lolos spesifikasi adalah variasi F, karena memiliki nilai gramatur 71 ± 2 g/m2, thickness 90 � 96 ?m, roughness ? 180 mL/min, intensity ply 2 29 � 32%, intensity ply 4 27 � 30%, dan IGT pick minimal 0.5 m/s.rnrnThis study aims to determine the content of CMC (Carboxymethyl cellulose) and PVA (Polyvinyl acetate) as chemical additives for surface sizing in increasing the quality of CF (Coating Front) paper of NCR (Non Carbon Required). The main purpose of surface sizing is to improve surface properties and strenghten fiber and pigment at the paper surface. The research was carried out in stages: checking the properties of raw materials, preparation of tapioca starch, CMC, and PVA, as well as testing the properties of paper after surface sizing and CF paper. Variations were made from (A) tapioca starch 97%: CMC 3%; (B) tapioca starch 95%: CMC 5%; (C) tapioca starch 90%: CMC 10%; (D) tapioca starch 100% + PVA 1 kg/ton paper; (E) tapioca starch 100% + PVA 2 kg/ton paper; (F) tapioca starch 100%+ PVA 3 kg/ton paper. For base paper after the surface size, only variation A and B pass the NCR paper specification which has grammatur of 69 ± 2 g/m2, thickness 90 ± 4 ?m, smoothness 30 ± 4 bekk seconds, and air permeance 550 ± 250 mL/min. CF paper that can be used is variation F, because it has grammatur of 71 ± 2 g/m2, thickness of 90 � 96 ?m, roughness ? 180 mL/min, intensity ply 2 29 � 32%, intensity ply 4 27 � 30%, and IGT pick at least 0.5 m/s.
