OPTIMASI PEMAKAIAN GUAR GUM DALAM MEMPERTAHANKAN STRENGTH PROPERTIES PADA KERTAS TULIS CETAK

Pada dasarnya serat sendiri memiliki kekuatan individu untuk saling berikatan, kekuatan tersebut tergantung pada distribusi individu serat pada lembaran kertas dan ikatan hidrogen yang terbentuk akibat penggilingan. Namun dalam industri kertas, khususnya pada kertas tulis cetak juga ditambahkan bahan pengisi (filler). Bahan tersebut dapat berdampak pada turunnya nilai strength properties. Sehingga perlu ditambahkannya bahan aditif untuk meningkatkan strength properties pada kertas tulis cetak. Guar gum merupakan bahan polimer alami yang dapat membantu meningkatkan nilai retensi, strength properties dan memperbaiki formasi kertas. Pada penelitian ini dibuat variasi dosis guar gum sebesar 0,1%, 0,3%, 0,5% dan 0,7% dari berat kering kertas. Berdasarkan hasil dan analisis penelitian, diperoleh bahwa pada penambahan guar gum dengan dosis sebesar 0,5% nilai retensi paling tinggi, namun strength properties kertas yang dihasilkan kurang optimal. Pada dosis penambahan guar gum sebesar 0,3%, didapatkan hasil optimum dalam mempertahankan semua strength properties dan meningkatkan formasi kertas.rnrnBasically the fiber has individual strength to bind to each other, the strength depends on the distribution of individual fibers on the paper sheet and the hydrogen bonds formed by refining process. Guar gum is a natural polymer material that can increase the value of retention, strength properties and improve paper formation. In this study, guar gum dosage variations were 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5% and 0.7% of the dry weight of the paper. Based on the results and analysis of the study, it was found that in addition to guar gum with a dose of 0.5% the highest retention value, but the paper strength properties produced were less optimal. At an additional dose of guar gum of 0.3%, optimum results were obtained in maintaining all strength properties and increasing paper formation.
